The establishment of the kingdom by Lekemegne

The Bangoua kingdom was founded around the 14th century by the valiant hunter Lekemegne (nicknamed Djopvup). According to oral tradition, he discovered this wildlife-rich territory during an expedition with his twin brother Nouthe. Following a strategic fraternal separation, Lekemegne settled permanently to found the kingdom of Bangoua, while his brother Nouthe became the founding king of the sister chiefdom, Batoufam. The community adopted the traditional name "MbaNgwe", sealing a strong dynasty in the Ndé Division.

Our museum

The Royal Museum of the Bangoua Superior Chiefdom

Inaugurated in 2011 within a magnificent modern building that respects traditional architectural codes, the Bangoua Royal Museum is one of the most dynamic heritage conservatories in the Ndé Division. This space of art and memory preserves and promotes the treasures of the MbaNgwe community gathered since the 14th century. The museum houses a remarkable collection of wooden sculptures, intricately beaded royal thrones, sacred musical instruments, and both anthropomorphic and zoomorphic ritual masks.Through a modern and richly documented museographical tour, the museum highlights the craftsmanship of the Medumba cultural area, the history of regional scripts, and the origins of the famous biennial Macabo festival established in 1958. It stands as an essential cultural stop for travelers wishing to understand the strength, resilience, and artistic creativity of the Bamileke people.
