Period 1 of 3

The establishment of the kingdom by Fô Fondoup

• The Baleng kingdom was founded around the 14th century on the Mifi high plateaus by the pioneer King (Fô) Fondoup. Renowned for the bravery and military skill of its fighters, the community derives its name from the local word Leng, meaning "to aim" or "to shoot an arrow". Baleng is thus the historic land of elite archers. Over the centuries, the chiefdom established itself as a central entity in the Grassfields, defined by heavy territorial expansion and structured governance.
