1240 - 1700

The founding of the kingdom by King Tagni

The Bafoussam kingdom was founded around the 13th century by the pioneer King (Fong) Tagni, who led his people from the Noun plains to settle on the left bank of the Mifi river. As a conquering and diplomatic people, the community became renowned for its ability to acquire and pacify new lands, hence the authentic traditional name "Fusap" (literally meaning "those who bought or acquired the land"). The chiefdom then structured itself as a political pillar of the Grassfields.

1700 - 1988

The assertion of Fusap power and colonial transitions

• Over the following centuries, the chiefdom consolidated its territory against neighboring kingdoms. In the 20th century, it navigated German and then French colonial administrations while preserving its customary structures. Under the long and memorable reign of His Majesty Ngompe (who passed away in 1988), the Bafoussam kingdom asserted itself as an essential first-degree chiefdom, balancing its high traditional status with the rapid urban development of Bafoussam as the regional capital.

1988 - 2026

The reign of His Majesty Njitack Ngompe Pélé

Enthroned in December 1988, His Majesty Njitack Ngompe Pélé succeeded his father to become the first-degree chief of the Fusap kingdom. A statesman and engineer by training, his nearly four-decade reign has been defined by modernizing palace infrastructure, establishing the grand museum, and protecting sacred forests from urban sprawl. He serves as the guardian of the city's spiritual and cultural balance, championing Bamileke values both in Cameroon and abroad.
